In 2009, Prerna Boys School was opened in recognition of the fact that, in order to truly achieve a gender-just world, boys must also receive an education that teaches them to critically examine the construction of gender in patriarchal societies. They must learn that, while patriarchy is not their fault, it does give them unfair power and privilege and is extremely cruel to the women and girls they love. With this in mind, SHEF created an emergent curriculum with the boys, to help them understand gender equality, build empathy, and reframe their notions of masculinity, manhood, and boyhood in a more egalitarian way.
