SHMUN 2013

A student led, student run initiative, SHMUN 2013, under the aegis of the Senior Debating Society was held in school on 31st Oct and 1st Nov 2013.

This was a conference with a difference. The difference lay at the very roots of this initiative where the boys and girls, dressed as graceful & debonair young diplomats  in an international arena presented their views with eloquence, thereby exhibiting their knowledge of international affairs and world politics .

The topic of this amazing conference was ‘the Syrian crisis ‘ and delegates from various  member countries across the globe sat in the General Assembly and discussed solutions to this burning issue which is a cause for worry for all nations . Be it the threat of nuclear  armament , chemical warfare , oil supply depletion and above all the looming threat of a World War-you name it and it was tabled!

Through this conference, these young ladies and gentlemen, learnt UN procedures , parliamentary protocol the significance of a consensus, oratory skills garnering support through ‘lobbying ‘ and above all voicing their opinion to find long term solutions to benefit this world .

The entire ‘MUN’ was also a sharp learning curve for members of the Press Corps , logistics and management groups as  well as the audience alike. It concluded with hope for an Inter-School SHMUN conference, next year.

Words of appreciation:
I was delighted to be a guest at the afternoon session of the United Nations General Assembly, convened in a very lively way at the Study Hall School in Lucknow.  Each student who spoke was clear, poised and informed.

They knew their country’s position and articulated it well. The session ran efficiently; the co- chairs handled their roles very well, enforcing time limits for the speakers and making good calls on protocols like voting.

I was in the company of a very attractive group of students–handsome, well-dressed, energetic and good-natured.  They were enjoying themselves.

Participation in MUN is clearly a positive and profound learning experience and the school is to be commended for including it in the students’ busy lives.  Well done.
