Study Hall School children showcase democratic values through performing arts

Study Hall School organised two day annual concert on 4 and 5 December, 2019 at Sant Gadge Ji Maharaj auditorium. The first day of the concert showcased drama, music and dance that focused on the theme ‘We the people of India’.

The principal of Study Hall School, Shalini Sinha welcomed the audience and talked about the importance of teaching democratic values to children. She said, “we hope to inspire other schools to take initiatives to teach children their constitutional rights and help them become democratic citizens.”

The founder of SHEF, Dr Urvashi Sahni addressed the audience and said, “For a thriving democracy, the people must learn to be active democratic citizens. At SHEF, we educate children not only to excel in academics but more importantly to become active democratic citizens”

The show began with the school’s orchestra “SHIMONICS” presented a performance that included 14 instruments. Children of class 10 presented a song “KAUN HAI MADARI YAHAN, KAUN JAMOORA” written by SwanandKirkire, the song conveyed how we, the citizens, end up giving a lot of importance to the people in power and underestimate the true ethos of democracy – by the people, for the people. Class 7 presented a dance drama titled “JAATI NA PUCHO KOI” which emphasised the need to eradicate the discrimination that still prevails in the name of caste. Children of class 6th presented a dance drama “AND BETAAL ASKED” based on the tales of Vikram Betaal, the theme was brought out by Betaal by asking pointed questions about the class divide, while Vikram sheepishly tried to answer them. Class 8 children presented a drama “ASTITVA” about a woman’s struggle to search for her identity in a predominantly patriarchal country. Class 11 presented a drama “STILL ALIVE”, based on the autobiography of Mr. Manoranjan Byapari. The drama focused on injustice that Dalits have to face from members of higher castes.

The concert was brought to a close with Class 9 dramatized-dance performance “JAI HO” showcasing the transformation of India from being a British Colony to a Democratic nation. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the energetic performances and lauded the sincere efforts, hard work, and dedication of the children and teachers alike.
