Inter house Indian Classical Music Competition
Inter house Indian Classical Music competition was held on 22 August 2012. The senior school students got to feel and understand the multifaceted charm and elegance of ‘ragas’. The school’s effort is to make children understand that Indian classical music is a rich component of Indian culture. The theme this year was ‘tarana’ in various pure ‘ragas’. During practices the school walls echoed with enchanting melodies. Their hard work paid off by a grand success. Mrs Shalini Chandra who judged the event enlightened the audience that ‘Tarana,’ is a traditional form of classical vocal music. It is said to have originated by legendry Amir Khusro. A special feature of tarana is its unique vocabulary ‘nome’ ‘tome’ ‘dir’ which are set to music. Experts are of the opinion that these meaningless but melodious words help the singer’s pronunciation to a great deal. The other judges were the music teachers of Prep school and middle school Mr Beju and Mr Brijendra. Fireflame house piece in raga ‘Malkos’ brightened the audience and amazed the judges by putting them in a well deserved first place. Silveroak house followed next through a striking raga ‘Darbari’ and gave a notable performance. Jacaranda house forceful rendition in raga ‘Kedar’ followed a close to Silver oak house. Cypress house performance in raga ‘Bhopali’ could have been more beautiful had it been powered by adequate number of children. This report will not be complete without mentioning the school’s music ‘guru’, Raviji patiently guiding the children and never getting disheartened by training croaked voices ,screening sounds to melodious tunes . Special note must be made to tabla teacher Sanjay Srivastava for a strong and fitting accompaniment. We hope that whatever the children imbibe of our rich culture they will pass it on to generations to come.
2012 Independence Day Celebration
Senior school Study Hall affirmed their patriotism on the 15th of august with a lively celebration of the 66th Independence day in true spirit, with great zeal and enthusiasm. It began with the unfurling of the tricolour by the principal Mrs.Shalini Sinha. There after the entire school took pride in singing the national anthem followed by the pledge.
Soon after the program began the head boy AmbeshTiwari addressed the school with his inspirational words. Rabindranath Tagore’s beautiful poem “where the mind is without fear” was then recited by class 7-A students. They all spoke so eloquently that the judges had a hard time in deciding the winner. Ultimately Saumya and Adeel were adjudged first, Sunaina second and Ranaita stood third.
A vibrant dance was performed to a medley of songs adding to the cheer of the occasion with a spectacular, spellbinding formation in the end. An English song with props added to the patriotic fervour pervading all around. The girls from the Prerna School also joined in the celebrations spiritedly by singing a harmonious patriotic song. The entire school then sang a melodious number ‘azaadi ka din aaya’ that represented a united bond, of being the citizens of a great country, which began its independent journey on this very day 66 years ago. Social 2012
The Freshers Party hosted by class 12, yet again, turned out to be an instant hit. On the 4th of August at 10:30 a.m. the front court vibrated with foot tapping music along with radiant hues. It was a celebration for the young, of the young, by the young. Blessings symbolically rained down from the heavens above and cleared the haze as well as hopefully generated a strong sense of belonging, a fulfilling sense of camaraderie and fun galore between the two senior most classes. Several ice breakers, surreptitiously planned, were thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. When asked what made their day, the reply in no certain terms was ‘the food’ which was claimed to be delicious and required much needed replenishments.
As the raindrops kept falling on their heads, the feet ignored them as everyone kept swaying in sync with the music. Ah yes! Everyone let their hair down and enjoyed these pleasant informal moments which forever remain indelible in the heart of a collegian.

Inter House Dramatics Competition
Come August and, as Milton would say, Study Hall school heads to the “well trod stage.” Inter House Dramatics was staged on 9 August 2012 in the Sant Gadge Auditorium. The Jury comprised of Mrs. Manju Gupta, Vice Principal Chiranjeev Bharti, Mrs Shashi Mehta, Headmistress Prep School, Zahna Afzal alumni Study Hall. A large part of India still suffers from socio-economic divide. Indeed what is more dismaying is the apathy with which these contradictions are accepted by the society at large. Students are well apprised and sensitized to the shocking and shameful practices. This year too they picked up their pens and wrote scripts on corruption, caste, gender and poverty.
The first play “ Ek Naya Savera”by Cypress House depicted how a young girl faced caste bias. She left for the city, faced discrimination but got a benefactor who helped her to study medicine. She returned but before treating the upper caste elderly she asked a pertinent question if she was allowed to touch them. They asked for forgiveness and she successfully averted an epidemic.
Fire flame house play “Aaj Ka Abhimanyu” conveyed how a common man was oppressed and broken by the callousness and indifference of corrupt public servants. Saransh Virendra with his perfect and comic timing was adjudged the best actor.
Jacaranda House came up with an entertaining paradox depicting men undergoing similar discrimination like women. Memorable performances by Dharam and the rest of the cast effectively conveyed the issue of gender bias. The Play” Doosra Pahlu “was immensely enjoyed.
The winning play “Nav Vihan “by Silver oak house was replete with emotions and pathos. The play, brilliantly directed, was sparked off by a flashback of the protagonist victimized by poverty. What were noteworthy were the authentic sets and the heartfelt performance by Shruti Saxena which got her the first place.
The judges were highly impressed by the originality of the Plays, innovative sets and light & sound effects. The Principal Mrs. Shalini Sinha aptly commented that Education alone can unite our hearts to eliminate prejudices and inequalities. Dr Amrita Dass praised the school’s endeavour in empowering the youth to take charge of their lives and change the world for the better. The “Think and Share” session conducted by the Vice Principal Mrs. Meenakshi Bahadur evoked wonderful viewpoints on social inequalities from several students .Many of the students got the applause they so rightly deserved.
The results are as Follows.
FIRST: Silver Oak
SECOND : Jacaranda
SECOND : Fire Flame
THIRD : Cypress

HOPE Workshop on Lifestyle Disorder
On 27th of July, 2012 Sameena Shaikh from HOPE visited our school and enlightened us about lifestyle disorders. She said they are caused not by a virus or infection but are mostly self inflicted.. Because of the easy availability of junk food, children face obesity in their teens. It’s a dangerous trend and has to be fought by educating all about the harmful effects of refined flour and sugar. Junk food is addictive.
A film was also shown highlighting what we should go for in food items. Hepatitis B was also discussed. Not many know that it is a silent killer. Free screening and inexpensive vaccine is available in Lucknow.
Workshop on Photography
An in house photography workshop was organised by Ekisha Narain, Achintya Mohan and Mehdi Moosvi. Achintya had prepared a slide show of good photographs and had discussed the techniques of photography. Children who participated in it really enjoyed the presentation.
Yuva Manch 2012 : Drama Festival
A two day Drama Festival was held under the aegis of Yuva Manch, the endearing platform for theatre enthusiasts in Lucknow. Envisioned six years ago by Dr. Urvashi Sahni, the founder of Study Hall Educational Foundation. Thus, July 20th & 21st were very special evenings at the Paryatan Bhavan auditorium. On the first day Vidyasthali, Kanar which is a part of the Study Hall Educational Foundation, staged their Sanskrit play which was adapted from a Gujrati play by the famous playwright Geeju Bhai. The first day of this festival also featured two Hindi Dance Dramas. These were ‘Meera’ by the girls of Study Hall Foundation’s Prerna School and “Kabira Khada Bazar Mein’ by the present & past pupils of Study Hall. As one of its actor’s Aiman stated after the English Play, ‘A Visitor from Forest Hills’ that the challenge was “acting in a situation which seemed like a lively comedy but which bore the underlying strain of a near tragedy”, says it all.
Thus congratulations to the Study Hall family for laying stronger foundations and building greater milestones in this ‘universe of care’. Let’s now look out for Yuva Manch 2013!
