SHEF’s OUTREACH IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

  • Through the Aarohini Initiative (SHEF’s girls’ empowerment and education program) we have trained close to 4,000 government school teachers in critical feminist pedagogy in 1009 government schools (with over 100,000 students) in Uttar Pradesh (809 schools) and Rajasthan (200 schools) serving the most vulnerable populations of rural children.
  • Collaborating with the UP government’s District Institute and Education Training program, SHEF has trained 14,000 government school teachers in interactive, child-responsive, critical pedagogy. These teachers have implemented SHEF’s classroom methodologies with 330,000 students.
  • In partnership with UNICEF, SHEF has trained 7000 government school teachers on creating interactive, gender-sensitive, democratic classrooms. Another 75,000 teachers have been impacted through the Joyful Learning Project.
  • Video lessons available on SHEF's YouTube channel, DSHOnline, have amassed 20.2 million views and 126K subscribers throughout India and globally. The videos have been shared on the government's National Teacher Platform, expanding SHEF's reach to all government school teachers across India.
  • SHEF’s founder, Dr. Urvashi Sahni has long been an advocate of formally incorporating gender education in school curricula. She has consistently been involved in policy making and implementation with the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. She has served for 3 years as a member of the Chief Minister’s Advisory Council in the government of Rajasthan. In 2020, the government of India released a new National Education Policy (NEP) which outlines the vision of India's education system. Dr Sahni was invited to contribute and provide consultation during the drafting process, and has been inducted for the steering committees of primary education and secondary education for the rollout and implementation of NEP across the state of Uttar Pradesh.
